Doing it yourself costs less if your document is already in the right form and you have the time. Our service is for people who cannot risk a rejection or a missed deadline.

The steps if you do it yourself

  1. Get the right version of the document. Birth, death and marriage records must be certified copies from Oregon Vital Records in Portland or from the county. School records must be signed by a school official.
  2. Have it notarized if required. Diplomas, transcripts, powers of attorney and affidavits all need an Oregon notary before the state will accept them.
  3. Send or take it to the Secretary of State in Salem with the request and the fee.
  4. Wait for the return mail. The state sends documents back by First Class Mail unless you include a prepaid shipping label.

Most rejections happen at step 1 or 2: a photocopy instead of a certified copy, or a signature that was never notarized.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an apostille in Beaverton?

Yes. Pac Signing Notary at 1500 NW Bethany Blvd, Suite 200 prepares and files apostilles. The apostille itself is issued by the Oregon Secretary of State in Salem.

Do I have to go to Salem for an Oregon apostille?

No. You can mail your request to the Secretary of State, or have our Beaverton office file it for you.

Can I get an apostille at the DMV, the post office or a UPS store?

No. None of them issue apostilles. Only the Secretary of State does for Oregon documents, and the U.S. Department of State does for federal documents.

Can a notary issue an apostille?

No. A notary notarizes the signature, and the state then issues the apostille on top of that notarization. Our office does the first step and files the second. Read more: can a notary apostille a document.

What is the most common reason an apostille is rejected?

The wrong version of the document. The state needs a certified copy of a vital record or a notarized signature, not a photocopy.

How long does it take through your Beaverton office?

Most state apostilles are ready in 1 to 5 business days.

How much does it cost?

The first document is $195 and each additional Oregon document is $20.

Does an apostille expire?

The apostille itself has no expiry date. Some countries only accept documents issued within the last few months, so check with the office that requested it. See expiration of apostilles.
