What Washington requires for each document

Washington’s rules differ from Oregon’s in a few places, which is where people get caught out.

  • Birth and death certificates: an original certified copy from Washington.
  • Marriage certificates: a certified copy from the county auditor that issued it, or from the state Center for Vital Statistics. See how to get your marriage certificate apostilled.
  • Washington college transcripts: an official transcript signed by the registrar. No notarization is needed.
  • Diplomas: the original, or a copy notarized by a Washington notary. See how to apostille a diploma.
  • Powers of attorney, affidavits and consents: notarized by a Washington notary. We do this in the office.
  • Passport or driver license copies: a copy notarized as true and correct by a Washington notary.
  • Washington State Patrol background checks: a notarized clearance letter.

A Washington apostille can only sit on a Washington notarization. If your document was notarized in Oregon, it goes to Oregon instead.
